چکیده

Background As agriculture has intensified, many once-common wildflowers have declined in arable landscapes, which widespread implications for associated ecosystem services. The incorporation of sustainable practices, example, growing living mulches (in-field, non-crop plant ground cover, maintained during the target crop season), can boost biodiversity, but few wildflower species been utilised this context.Aims Our aim was to determine suitability species, once considered weeds, use as mulches. Methods We first screened a number germination when with common cereal, barley (Hordeum vulgare). then grew two (Centaurea cyanus and Scandix pecten-veneris) pots glasshouse without barley, alone test impact on growth biomass. Results Neither significantly negatively impacted biomass. Barley initially facilitated S. pecten-veneris, ultimately suppressed above-ground biomass both wildflowers. However, were able coexist alongside barley. Conclusions experiment provides evidence that weeds traditional potential be grown could incorporated part mulch.
